An opinion piece on USNews shared a brief analysis on whether it made sense to tax eCigarettes. I would normally tend to think it’s just sleezy campaign marketing for the industry, but in this case, the author is an industry expert, having assumed roles in the White House advising on taxes and economic strategies.

“Taxing e-cigarettes would threaten public health by penalizing a product that holds the promise of luring people away from the traditional cigarettes that have caused so much death and disease. That’s no excuse for taxing a product that can help people quit smoking, improve health outcomes and ultimately save lives.”

Don’t you hate it when you rush out the door, get to work and realize you left your vaporizer in your car or at home? Vaporizer + iPhone  = VapeCase, a new product from Lotus that combines two personal pieces of technology to make our lives a little more convenient. The case contains a separate 2000mAh Li-ion battery that accommodates popular tanks (510 + eGo thread adapter), and has four preset voltage settings from of 2.7V to 5V. The case offers standard protection for your phone, an on/off switch, a set of LED indicators to represent current power, and a micro USB charging port.

You can get one of these for about $100 for the following phones:

  • iPhone 5c
  • iPhone 4s
  • Samsung Galaxy S4
  • Samsung Note 2
  • Samsung Note 3
  • HTC One

I always thought a brilliant technologist would create an iPhone attachment where you could screw in your tank, and actually vape from your iPhone battery and be able to control all the voltage settings from an iPhone app, but this would take a ton of programming, although it would look pretty awesome. Although, imagine taking a stressful call while taking hits from your phone, but then spiking the current draw on your phone that might cut conversations rather brief – DOH!

The VapeCase solution mitigates eating up your valuable phone’s battery life, but the downside is having to charge both phone and case separately – not the end of the world, as most extended iPhone battery-cases also require separate charging efforts.

The case is a novel idea, and overall I think its a great effort but at $100, it will likely be viewed as a mediocre vaporizer battery, and not a great case. I suppose the next evolution could be an adjustable position for taking hits from your vaporizer without losing the talk position of the phone – who knows what obnoxious contraption may appear ;)

I had the opportunity to visit the eJuice bar at the Vapor Lounge in Walnut Creek, CA. In the past six months, three eCig shops have opened within 2 miles of each other, so it was my calling to start spreading the word.

I was warmly greeted by the manager and perused the menu of over a dozen collections of juice. This tasting ‘lounge’ has offered the widest selection of juice I’ve seen, so ask to see the menu of juice.

An eCig store in Walnut Creek opening two months ago, featuring a wide selection of hardware and Liqua ejuice. The products are merchandised well, and will compete with Vapor Lounge on N. Broadway. The smaller layout shop offers a boutique feel, organized well, to make for an enjoyable vapor shopping experience. There are testers available, and they rebuild higher end atomizers.

Five Pawn prepares for grand opening of a tasting room to offer samplings of their newest eLiquid releases. The venue offers a industrial interior design finish, and will play great tunes as well as offer coffee service in the future. Five Pawns founder mentions they are keen in collecting as much feedback during the R&D phase, and plans to offer tasters the chance to sample juices that are being developed for commercial release. If you’re in Irvine, CA, it should be worth a stop.

Raymond Padilla provides a video with a sneak peak.

Five Pawns eLiquid is the best I’ve sampled thus far. They currently offer just five flavors of expertly-blended juices that should appeal to just about anyone. I had the pleasure of getting the introduction to Five Pawns at the Vapor Den in San Francisco, where the dessert oriented flavor profiles wowed several people included the store operator. Here are the flavors:

  • GRANDMASTER: Smooth creamy peanut butter with banana cream and balanced with velvety caramel. Buttery and smooth with a medium bodied throat hit.
  • ABSOLUTE PIN: Intense complexity of Irish cream, cinnamon spice, and caramel with subtle absinthe undertones.  Lively and with a medium to full bodied throat hit.
  • GAMBIT: Sweet and mellow ripe apple with savory pie crust and caramel. Topped off with French Vanilla ice cream and unsweetened whipped cream. Sweet and savory with a medium bodied throat hit.
  • QUEENSIDE:  Delicate blood orange with creamy French vanilla.  Light yet creamy citrus with a medium bodied throat hit.
  • BOWDEN’S MATE: Crisp mint with subtle chocolate undertones and a French vanilla finish. Delicate yet soft with a refreshing tingle and medium to full bodied throat hit.

The eLiquid is packaged uniquely in a cardboard cylinder, and the liquid prepared in 30mL glass eye-dropper bottles. Finally, a company that delivers in glass bottles! Each bottle is numbered within the batch, and given custom labels.

I sampled all five flavors, and went for the Gambit, which I would describe best as a cinnamon apple pie – producing the richest flavors blended masterfully.

These are liquids that are full-bodied and fill up your entire palate, begging for more. Give Five Pawns a shot.
